2 October – Brexit and EU competition policy

UK and EuropeDear Friends,

antitrustitalia’s 40th lunch talk is scheduled on Monday, 2 October 2017 at Confindustria Bruxelles (Av. de la Joyeuse Entrée 1 – 1040 Bruxelles – Metro Schuman).

Nicola Pesaresi, Member of the Task Force for the Preparation and Conduct of the Negotiations with the United Kingdom under Article 50 TEU (TF50) (Brexit Task Force) will give a presentation in English on:

“Brexit and EU competition policy”

On 29 March 2017, the UK Government served formal notice under Article 50 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union to terminate the UK’s membership of the EU. On the basis of Article 50, the EU Treaties shall cease to apply to the UK once its exit is effective. The nature of the impact of Brexit on competition law will depend on the model adopted by the UK for its future relations with the EU. Mr. Pesaresi will present the current state of play of the Brexit process and will sketch the consequences of UK exit on EU competition law and state aid.

Nicola Pesaresi is a member of Michel Barnier’s Brexit Task Force and leads the Horizontal issues, cross-cutting policies and level playing field cluster. Mr. Pesaresi has a long-ranging experience in competition law. Prior to joining the Brexit Task Force, he has been Head of Unit at the Directorate General for Competition of the European Commission since 2005. As Head of Unit at DG COMP, he was responsible for State aid Strategy and has previously been in charge of State aid policy and scrutiny, State Aid case support and State Aid coordination. He previously worked for the Bank of Italy for nine years.
